Eating on a Budget: Marukame Udon

Marukame Udon first opened its doors in 2011. Since then, they have become one of the most popular restaurants in Waikiki and on Fort Street Mall. The Waikiki location has an almost constant line from opening to closing!

The Experience

Upon arrival, you may need to wait in line, but don’t worry, the line moves fast. You can decide what you want to eat using the menus posted outside. Some menu items can be made either hot or cold. Be sure to specify when you order.

When you get to the counter and place your order, the staff will make your bowl right in front of you using fresh noodles! Additional toppings like an extra egg or extra beef as well as extra noodles can be purchased.

After you get your bowl, you will be able to select various tempura items including croquettes, shrimp tempura, calamari, tempura mushrooms, kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), chicken karaage, etc. Priced by the each.

There is also a musubi selection near the end of the line. Musubis depend on availability, but selections include spam musubis, salmon musubis, ume musubi, etc.

What to Try

The noodles at Marukame Udon are phenomenal. They are soft and tasty without being overcooked. All bowls come with tempura flakes and green onion.

The #1 bestseller at Marukame Udon is the Nikutama Udon. It includes a half-boiled egg and beef, and it can be made hot or cold. Cold udon is great for a refreshing meal on a hot and humid day!

For a more plain meal, another popular option is the bukake udon. Served either hot or cold, the broth is flavorful without being over powerful. However, it does not come with an egg.
